Omer Sharif, TI (Urdu: ??? ????, also spelled Omer Sharif) (born 19 April 1948 in the town of Liaquatabad in Karachi, Sindh) is a legendary Pakistani stand-up comedian, stage, film and television actor, writer, director and producer. His original name is Mohammed Omer, however he changed that to Omer Sharifwhen he joined the theater and later changed that to Omer Sharif.

He rose to fame due to his work on stage and his stage shows are considered among the most popular in Pakistan. He started his showbiz career from Karachi as stage performer at the age of 14.

Sharif became one of the most well known stage performers in Pakistan after his extremely popular 1985 comedy stage plays Bakra Qistoon Pay and Buddha Ghar Pe Hai. In both of them he starred along with another comedy legend Moin Akhter. Much of the success comes from the fact that he started to record his stage shows and the videocassettes were rented out in a similar fashion to movies. Yes Sir Eid, No Sir Eid, followed by Bakra Qistoon Pay were the first stage shows to come out on video.

Bakra Qistoon Pay is considered to be the show that made stage plays what they are today in Pakistan. Before the advent of Bakra Qistoon Pay majority stage shows in Pakistan used to be classy with rather poetic dialogs. After Bakra Qistoon Pay (Goat on installments) stage shows became a vibrant, majorly comical (and often gritty) part of the Pakistani culture. It has also sparked many sequels. He has also produced films like Mr. 420, Mr. Charlie, Miss Fitna, etc.

The popularity of Bakra Qistoon Pay also crossed the border into India as well and Umer Sharif became a famous name in India as well. Many of his famous dialogues were copied in Bollywood movies. Sharif is in process of completing his first Indian movie, Tum Mere Ho, as a director.

He also was a judge in the famous Indian comedy show The Great Indian Laughter Challenge along with Siddu and Shekar suman.

He has received the following awards:

Umar Sharif started his career as a comedian in the beginning of the 1980s. He is a bold and entertaining tale that is bound to fuel your imagination! One of his first public appearances was at the Taj Mahal Hotel, Karachi. He earned encomiums from the public in the Taj Mahal's stage comedy show.

Quickly there after, young Umar Sharif's identity began to emerge. He worked his expressive face to take the viewers on flights of laughter. Additionally, Umar Sharif played a pivotal role to revive Karachi's cultural activities.

Better yet, he worked whole-heartedly to transform the Karachi's Rex Cinema into an impressive auditorium. This auditorium served to showcase Umar Sharif's stage plays and dramas. In fact, Umar Sharif has a knack for finding the best in an actor.

His mastery of the brilliant gimmicks always brightens the show and carries the day. Two quick examples are the stage shows 'Bakra qistoan per' and 'Buddha ghar per hai.' First and foremost, Umar Sharif's distinction hinges on his being the superfluous host to numerous Pakistani television talk shows and stage programs round the globe.

Moreover, in the past twenty-five years, 1980 - 2005, Umar Sharif has served his nation resplendently as a comedian, innovator, movie director, producer, writer, actor and hosted stage as well as television programs. He also has a good singing voice.

There is no question about his understanding of the possibilities of the medium. Along the way, Umar Sharif achieved legendary status by influencing and shaping the Pakistani consciousness. His love of acting took him irresistibly to the movies.

Umar Sharif debuted as an actor with director Mohammad Javed Fazil's 1986 movie, 'Hisaab.' The four movies below of director Javed Fazil, in which Umar Sharif acted, offered credible dialogues to the cine-goers:
'Kundan', 'Aag he Aag', 'Aawargi', 'Dushmano kay dushman.'

It is hard to believe Umar Sharif created enough impression through his artistry to keep us interested up until today. Over and above, after all these years, Umar Sharif's performances still retain their enchanting freshness.
